OUR LODGE
Stonehill River Lodge sits on the banks of the Breede River, about 23km from Swellendam and roughly 240km from Cape Town. Milkwood trees and giant aloes shade the property, mountains close the view in every direction, and bontebok, eland, zebra and springbok graze the open ground between the villas and the water.
The villas are self-catering and built for space. Each one has a fully-equipped kitchen, an open-plan lounge and dining area with an indoor fireplace, floor-to-ceiling windows onto the river and the mountains, and a furnished patio with a braai. Six-sleeper villas have a private hot tub on the deck. The five eight-sleeper villas share two communal hot tubs on the riverbank. Units are serviced Monday to Saturday, so the holiday starts the moment you put the bags down.
Days here are spent outside. Guests hike and mountain bike the trails, raft the Breede through Levels 1 to 3 rapids, paddle it standing up, or fish it with rods hired at reception. There are picnic packs for the shaded spots along the bank, an outdoor chess set, and a shelf of board games for the afternoons the weather turns.
Swellendam is one of South Africa’s oldest towns and worth an afternoon on its own, with the Drostdy Museum, the Saturday market under the oaks, and galleries and coffee shops along the way. Bontebok National Park is close enough for a morning drive and a picnic beside the river. Stonehill brings nature, comfort and quality family time together in one setting.
MAKE A BOOKING
Every villa here is self-catering, with an open-plan living area, an indoor fireplace and a braai on the patio. Choose the one that fits your party and the river does the rest.
ACTIVITIES
The river runs the length of the property, so most days start on it or beside it. Rafting, paddling, fishing, hiking and mountain biking are all here, and Swellendam, Bontebok National Park and the whale coast are within a comfortable drive.

EAT AND DRINK
This is mountain living, without the effort. Everything is considered, inviting you to slow down, and reconnect with what matters.

A varied menu that runs from 06:30 to 21:00, served under the thatch or out in the open above the valley. The children get their own options, and the bar keeps a good range of local beers and Cederberg wines for afterwards.

If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle, head over to Stonehill River Lodge. You can immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature.
Make sure you do some river rafting, swim in the lovely river water and for those who dare, jump off from the 6m cliff into the river. It is an amazing experience.

Yes. Every villa has a fully-equipped kitchen with cutlery and crockery, a fridge freezer, a microwave and an espresso machine. There is no shop, restaurant or bar on the property, so it is worth doing your shopping before you arrive.
Check-in at Stonehill River Lodge is from 15:00 and check-out is before 10:00. Late check-out carries an hourly surcharge, so let reception know in advance if you would like to stay on for part of the morning.
No. Pets are not permitted and a no-smoking policy applies throughout. There are stairs in all of the villas and the units are not wheelchair friendly, so tell reception if anyone in your party needs level access.
Yes. There is a playground with a trampoline and jungle gyms, a climbing wall, a labyrinth, an arts and crafts table and the Dream Xplorers programme, which children join at reception on arrival. The swimming pool is cold water.
Stonehill River Lodge is entered using an access number that reception sends the day before you arrive. Load it onto your phone and dial it at the resort gate. Tell the lodge in advance if you will arrive after 16:00.
Stonehill River Lodge runs a backup generator during load shedding and Eskom outages. Some services and facilities may be unavailable while it is running, and the villas carry no battery-operated lighting, so it is worth packing a torch.
