The resort is laid out along the top of the pass, with the main building holding reception, the restaurant, the bars and the lounge, and the lawns dropping away below to the pool. The wellness centre, the games room and the play area are all a short walk from the rooms, and the conference venues sit slightly apart with their own patios and fire pit, so a function never takes over the whole resort.

The resort’s restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily from 06:30 to 21:00, with a varied menu that includes options for children. Sit indoors under the thatch or out on the deck, where the Olifants Valley and the Cederberg do the decorating.

Kloof Bar

The bar is well stocked with local beers and a good range of Cederberg wines, and it is where most evenings end up. It also hosts quiz nights, karaoke, cocktail evenings and beer, wine and rooibos tastings for groups staying at the resort.

SOOTHING WARM WATERS

Indoor heated pool

Heated year round, to 25 degrees in winter and 30 in summer, which makes it the one facility that does not care what the weather is doing outside. It is a short walk from the hotel rooms and popular with families before dinner.

TAKE A DIP WITH A VIEW

Outdoor swimming pool

The main pool sits below the lawns with sun loungers and thatched umbrellas around it, and the whole valley laid out beyond. Swimming towels are handed out at reception, so there is no need to pack your own for the day.

Games room

Kitted out with a pool table, table tennis, boule and air hockey, and open to everyone staying at the resort. It is the obvious place to send a restless group when the mountain weather closes in for the afternoon.

The resort’s spa offers facials, massages, body treatments, waxing, tints, and hands and feet, plus packages that combine several treatments. Bookings and enquiries go through the spa directly, and the full menu is at reception and in your room.

Conference venues

Two meeting rooms seat 60 delegates each and open into a single venue for up to 120, with a podium, a wireless HD projector and screen, surround sound, microphones, flip charts and Wi-Fi. Both open onto tiled patios and an outdoor braai and fire pit.

A playground with a jungle gym, trampolines set where the children can see out over Citrusdal and the Olifants Valley, and an outdoor chess set on the lawn. There is a separate children’s recreation room indoors as well.

The same versatile indoor space takes 60 to 120 guests for a ceremony or reception, while the lawns hold up to 120 for an outdoor ceremony with the Cederberg behind you. A wooden gazebo with sheer draping is set up as the outdoor chapel.

THINGS TO DO

Archery, Air Golf and the Road Beyond the Gate

Archery

Supervised sessions on the resort's own range, with fifteen standard bows supplied and an instructor walking you through holding the bow, aiming and firing at a static target. Suitable from about eight years old, and no experience is needed to take part.

Air Golf (Disc Golf)

Air Golf (Disc Golf), played on the lawns above the valley. You throw a flighted disc down the fairway and finish by landing it in a chain-draped basket, fewest throws wins. No clubs, no handicap, and the Cederberg stands behind every hole.

Mini Golf

A nine hole mini golf course laid out through the resort's gardens, easy enough for small children and competitive enough to settle an argument. It is the most booked activity here and the one the Dream Xplorers reward ladder starts with.

Walking and Hiking Trails

Trails lead straight out from the resort into the fynbos along the top of the pass, with open landscape, big views back over Citrusdal and no gate to drive through first. Walk them at your own pace and tell reception which way you are heading.

Remote Control Car Racing

Radio controlled cars run on a track at the resort, which turns out to hold the attention of adults for considerably longer than anyone expects. It is a good filler between a late breakfast and an afternoon at the pool.

Painting

A guided painting session run at the resort, added to the activity list recently and aimed at guests who would rather spend an afternoon making something than climbing something. Ask at reception which days it is running while you are staying

Yes. Alongside the outdoor pool there is a heated indoor pool, kept at 25 degrees in winter and 30 degrees in summer, so it is usable whatever the Cederberg weather is doing.

Yes, complimentary Wi-Fi is provided for guests and is included in the conference packages. Coverage varies between the main building and the units, so ask at reception where the signal is strongest if you need to work.

Covered parking is available across Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort, and each self-catering chalet has its own bay beside the private entrance. Conference and event guests park on site as well.

A wheelchair-friendly hotel room and a wheelchair-friendly chalet are available on request, and the conference venues are wheelchair accessible. Mention your requirements when booking so the resort can allocate the right unit.
